IDU Headquarters welcomes special needs camp, "Alei Siyach" , at the IDU base in Kfar Tappuach

IDU Headquarters welcomes special needs camp, "Alei Siyach" , at the IDU base in Kfar Tapuach

This morning (Tuesday) a special dog show was held at the IDU base for dozens of people with special needs.

The dogs and handlers that performed, are used to helping missing people and their families, when going out to search every day or two.Today, they have managed to put smiles on the faces of children and adults with special needs who suffer doubly during the Corona which imposes on them long days without activity that they are used to experiencing every year during the summer vacation.

IDU Commander Mike Ben Yaakov said:
"We treat such events with reverence no less than operations to locate missing persons or prevent terrorist attacks with the four-legged lifesavers. What an inspiration to see the interaction between the dogs and the guys, and the joy that breaks boundaries in its wake."

A particularly moving moment occurred when one of the trainees asked for the right to speak from the host of the show, and showered greetings on the IDU, its volunteers and its staff.

IDU volunteer beats corona, makes aliyah and seeks to join IDF

IDU Volunteer beats Corona, makes Aliyah

and strives to join IDF

Bram Settenbrino’s journey to Israel has been anything but boring. In less than two years Bram, who hails
from Passaic, New Jersey managed to join the IDU (Israel Dog Unit), an elite Israeli civilian K9 unit, together
with his SAR dog, Danna, finding two missing people. How many 19 year-old American kids could boast rescuing or
recovering two missing persons? If that was not enough, Bram’s impressive finds came after police and other
rescue units surrendered and retired frustrated from the searches, telling him and the other IDU volunteers,
“go home, the missing person is not here, you are wasting your time”. Bram accomplished all of this while
on off days from his pre-military academy yeshiva studies at Mechinat Keshet Yehudah in the Golan Heights
and taking care of his elderly grandparents in Jerusalem.

Like many other IDU volunteers, Bram is a passionate Zionist, with a burning love for the Jewish people and a
special sense of calling with the courage of his convictions. The IDU has plenty of dedicated young Jews from North
America, who left the good-life of comforts in the west to immigrate to Israel and to engage in meaningful life-saving
activities with Israel’s lead Search and Rescue outfit, where they get all kinds of training which they put to good use
once they join the IDF, and which gives them an edge over their Israeli counterparts who compete to enter into
Israel’s finest combat units. However, one thing that sets Bram apart from some of his fellow “IDUniks” was the fact
that he contracted corona as “Patient #260” in Israel, and spent more than a month in a “Corona Hotel” recuperating.
This provided a special opportunity, as Bram and the IDU offered to send his sniffing service dog, Danna, in with him,
where they could commence trial corona diagnosis by sniffing dogs. This proposal was made to Litzman the former
minister of health. Despite this unique opportunity and a detailed program which was submitted to Litzman personally
and which was backed up by world class dog experts from around the world, the proposal went unanswered. Who
knows how many lives could have been saved if the early pilot would have been adopted.

None of this discouraged Bram from rushing to Israel’s Ministry of Interior to formally immigrate to Israel in his
quest to move onto his next set of battlegrounds in the IDF.

Bram’s face beams with happiness as he shows off his Teudat Zehut – Israeli ID card which he received last
week. He will soon be a Chayal Boded, a lone soldier in the IDF as he continues to live in the Israel Dog Unit base in
Tapuach in the Shomron, hoping to continue to save lives with his dog, Danna during furloughs from the IDF, like
other lone soldiers in the unit, who participated in IDU operations before, during and after their IDF service.

Emergency Crowd Funding Campaign for IDU - Israel Dog Unit

Support the Israel Dog Unit’s emergency crowd-funding campaign:

“FOUR LEGGED – LIFE-SAVERS”          PLEASE FORWARD!

or via PayPal:

The Israel Dog unit is now launching an emergency fundraising drive to save the unit and raise the necessary resources to continue its holy, life-saving work to find and rescue missing persons and to quell terror attacks with the use of specially trained search and rescue and security dogs.

The IDU is the number one search and rescue outfit in the Land of Israel finding and rescuing dozens of missing people, often, long after the official government agencies and rescue units have long abandoned the search. IDU has also gained the respect of other professional security forces due to its success in the foiling of many potentially fatal terrorist attacks.

The IDU operates multiple bases throughout Israel with hundreds of volunteers and dogs on call to carry out defensive security missions throughout the year, from the Northern Lebanese border to the Egyptian and Gaza borders; providing security dogs and free training to dozens of Jewish towns, kibbutzim and “settlements” on both sides of the Green Line.

The Kennel Campus in Kfar Tapuach houses several dozen volunteers, providing dormitories and mess-hall dining facilities. The Tapuach campus also serves as a training center for IDU personnel, trainers and security personnel also offering open seminars by world-class international dog experts who conduct working-dog seminars throughout the year.

The IDU has been hit hard by the Coronavirus. On the one hand, more people are in need of IDU’s life saving security and Search and Rescue services, while on the other hand many of our donors are no longer in a position to help sponsor our activities due to their own financial woes, brought on by the economic corona fallout. Clearly, we need to expand our support base so that more people know about the holy work of the IDU.

For the first time, after more than two decades of existence, the IDU is desperately reaching out to former volunteers, past and present donors and to many families of missing people or victims of terrorist attacks who have directly or indirectly benifitted from IDU services. The IDU was there for you, doing everything within and beyond its abilities to save so many Jewish lives. Now, it is time to save the IDU, so that the IDU will be there for you and all of the people of Israel tomorrow.

Please send this message out to as many pro-Israel friends, relatives and supporters as you can. Add your own personalized pitch and help the IDU during this critical time.

IDU strives to increase counter-terror measures in the wake of the recent Islamic terror surge in Israel, IDU strives to increase counter-terror measures

Jew murdered and another two injured in terror attack near Dolev

As we prepared this update of the recent activities of the Israel Dog Unit to fight terror in Israel and to aid in the search of missing people with the use of specially trained canines, we learned of the tragic news of yet another fatal attack in Israel that has flashed over the wire:
Three Jewish hikers were seriously wounded by a remotely detonated bomb at a popular water spring near Dolev. The terror attack happened around 10:15 AM on Friday.

As we told the many who have called us requesting security dogs in wake of the recent attack: “The I.D.U. – Israel Dog Unit vows to continue to step up activities to provide more security dogs to aid in the battle against Arab terrorism in Israel. Any family or “settlement” security team who seek additional means to protect themselves and their communities can request to join our canine security program and apply to receive a security dog and training in the proper maintenance and operation of a patrol dog”***

In Friday's attack, Paramedics arrived on the scene and promptly treated the three seriously wounded people:  Rabbi Eitan Shnerb (Shenrav) from Lod, age 46, now listed in moderate condition, stable and conscious; his son Dvir, 19, who is listed as seriously wounded with stomach and body wounds. He is unconscious and on a respirator.
His daughter Rina Shnerb HY”D, age 17, was in critical condition and underwent resuscitation efforts in the field, but has died from her wounds. The cemetery is being held in Lod Cemetery Friday.
Our condolences to the bereaved family and our prayers for a speedy recovery toRabbi Eitan and to his son Dvir, who remain in critical condition.

IDU AID IN terror-murder INVESTIGATION OF Dvir Sorek HY”D
Yeshiva student/soldier Dvir Sorek was brutally stabbed to death Aug 7, 19. His body was found outside of the back gate to Kibbutz Migdal Oz, in Gush Etzyon.  His grandfather, Rabbi Binyamin Herling was also murdered by Arab terrorists 19 years ago.

IDU rushed to the scene with highly trained cadaver dogs to aid authorities in the recovery of evidence to help solve the case and apprehend the terrorists responsible for the heinous crime.

Security forces proceeded to conduct an investigation of his murder but shortly after hit a dead end. The IDU was able to send Danna and Milo, two of the finest cadaver dogs in the possession of the unit to help gather evidence.

As we reported in our last update earlier this month: Two months before the murder of Dvir HY”D, The security Chief of Migdal Oz canceled his request made to I.D.U.  for a security patrol/tracking dog, due to lack of funds to maintain the service dog.

Shahab news agency, affiliated with Hamas published tweets comparing the murdered soldier Dvir Shurik to the lamb (offering) in the path of the resistance (this week’s holiday Eid-al-adha).
"Allah has given us power over animals and has permitted us to eat meat but only if we pronounce his name during the solemn act of taking life,” a description of the merry Muslim holiday of Eid Al Adcha. YM”S.

IDU on scene for Gush Etzion car-ramming terror attack

Friday, August 16th, the Israel Dog Unit was making its way with a few dogs and volunteers to do some training in the Gush Etzion area, when suddenly traffic came to a standstill not too far from the IDU’s van, traveling across from Elazaar. It was brought to the attention of the IDU that there was a car-ramming terror attack, injuring siblings Nahum Navis and his sister Noam Navis, as well as a reported 3rd victim who allegedly ran off into a nearby field, not even 100 meters from where the IDU van stood. The IDU, with 4 service dogs at the ready, was prepared to assist in the search for the reported 3rd victim who was originally thought missing.

Missing: Andy Yurovitz (found, alive and safe)
Never a dull moment in the IDU mobile emergency response team van; Friday afternoon, August 16th immediately following the ramming terror attack near Elazaar, the IDU was called to another nearby emergency;  Mr. Andy Yurovitz, an 83 year old gentleman with Alzheimer’s disease had gone missing. Baruch Hashem, Andy was found soon after.

One emergency chases another emergency literally – with the IDU on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week!
Monday morning while in training near Horashim forest, the Chief of Operations from the Ashdod police precinct called us in to aid in a high risk search for 33 year old Ariella Peres. She was found alive and well shortly after we arrived.

Immediately following the completion of the aforementioned anti-agricultural-terror exercise, despite having worked several days, almost non-stop, Ashdod police again called us in to aid in the search for two high risk missing people who were both later found alive and safe pictured below.

Big search day designated for this coming Thursday to find Eli Illovitz
Thursday Aug 29, IDU will be running yet another search to day find Eli Illovitz, father of five whose home burnt down in the Mevo Modiim tragedy, who was last seen near the forest of Meron, before LagBa’Omer. Please help forward picture shown below.

Kill the Jews like sheep in honor of Muslim holiday, urges Hamas, after murder of Jew..IDU Update

Yeshiva student/IDF soldier – brutally murdered – found dead near Migdal Oz, Gush Etzyon. Migdal Oz Security Chief previously requested security dog from IDU, but canceled request.
Yeshiva student/soldier Dvir Shurik was brutally stabbed to death last night Aug 7, 19. His body was found outside of the back gate to Kibbutz Migdal Oz, in Gush Etzyon.  His grandfather, Rabbi Binyamin Herling was also murdered by Arab terrorists 19 years ago.

Two months ago, The security Chief of Migdal Oz canceled his request made to I.D.U.  for a security patrol/tracking dog, due to lack of funds to maintain the service dog.

Matan Nefesh, the Chief of Security: “Mike I am sorry I did not have a dog, last night. By mere chance I walked several yards away from where Dvir was laying hours before he was found. Surely, if I had a dog, the dog would have indicated and led me to the body. For all I know he was still alive. However, at the time we had no idea that there was a missing person. The report only came in hours later, only after he was reported missing.” Was he still alive? Was there critical time lost? Was evidence discarded? Could there have been a much more effective pursuit which could have been started hours earlier?
I responded, “We are there for you and we are still prepared to give you a service dog worth 20,000 shekels for free and free training, despite our own difficult financial situation. The dog could be your partner, patrol with you and protect you as well as to help track terrorists in such cases.”

YM”S.

I.D.U. participated in a major exercise to track down “agricultural terrorists”
It is no secret that Arabs have been terrorizing Israeli farmers by waging what has been referred to by the Israeli Press as “a war of agricultural terror” against farms throughout Israel. The Jordan Valley has been hit particularly hard with the theft of millions of dollars-worth of livestock and equipment and with the torching of fields and trees in arson attacks.
The I.D.U. offers dogs and training to young farmers who have organized a network of emergency response tracking teams known as “Kochot-Mirdaf” with branches throughout Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley.

Wednesday, August 7th  the I.D.U. participated in a training exercise with the “Kochot Mirdaf” simulating an attack on Jewish shepherds and the theft of their flock. We helped to successfully track down the “thieves” to retrieve and return the flock to their rightful owners and to bring the “terrorists” to justice.
It is relevant to note that this exercise was a simulation of a real incident which occurred several weeks ago in Eshtamoa, near the Judean desert, in which the “Kochot-Mirdaf” successfully saved the lives of two Jewish shepherds, found the culprits who ran away, had them arrested, and returned the flock to the shepherds who had been injured in the attack. The “Kochot-Mirdaf” had been on an exercise in the area at the time.
Big week for Muslim “agricultural terror” perpetrations; exercise and patrols to deter and catch the terrorists responsible
In view of the fact that this week marks a significant Muslim holiday, Eid al-Adha, which is celebrated by the slaughtering and consumption of sheep, many of which are stolen from local Jewish farmers, this exercise is particularly significant. The exercise contributes not only to deterrence but allows for the I.D.U. and “Kochot-Mirdaf” to swiftly respond to potential terrorist incidents in the region.

Kennel construction and expansion at the Kfar Tapuach Campus moving forward
Additional dorms and kennels to house the new volunteers and service dogs that are due to arrive shortly.

I.D.U. plays a role in the breakthrough in murder case of Nava Elimelech, the 12 old girl abducted and brutally murdered 37 years ago
In respect of the gag order placed on the Nava Elimelech case, little can be revealed at this time about the new developments in the case. We will suffice to say that I.D.U. experts played a role in the reopening of the case and in offering new insights into the case. Nava Elimelech was 12 years old when she was abducted and brutally murdered 37 years ago. The decapitated and dismembered parts of her body were found in plastic bags after they washed ashore on Tel Aviv beaches, 9 days after her disappearance. Little can be shared at this time about the horrific murder that shattered not only the Almaliach family, but an entire nation back in 1982.

Nava was one of 22 unsolved cases that the I.D.U. had been actively investigating. The picture and story of 21 additional cases of missing people are still prominently displayed on the I.D.U. dining hall, and the unit continues to investigate and conduct searches hoping to resolve the remaining cases, some of which appear to have been terror-related.

I.D.U. participated in a major exercise of the police search and rescue units overseen by the Shomron and Jordan Valley Police SAR unit and joined by branches of Police SAR units from across the country
Ironically it is none other than the I.D.U. that is called out to participate in police training exercises, and not police dogs and their handlers.
The unique exercise which was held last Thursday and Friday in the Shomron and in the Jordan Valley was planned out for months by the Shomron-Jordan Valley Police SAR Unit and joined by their SAR branches from across the country.

Our dogs and handlers helped find the missing decoy, who had fallen in to a pit.
Teddy, one of our dogs was slightly injured in the exercise, and has since recuperated.

I.D.U. helped run the Command Center at high-profile search for elderly man found dead in Kfar Saba
Last Wednesday-Thursday night the I.D.U. helped manage the search for Nissim Nachshon, an elderly man in Kfar Saba. Unfortunately the man was found dead in an open area, near the local country club, after more than 36 hours of searching for him.

I.D.U. dispatches another security dog to Shedmot Mechola, in Jordan Valley
Sat. night an additional security patrol dog, Alpha, has been dispatched to Elyashiv where he patrols and guards the fields and orchards near Shedmot Mechola, along with Rex and Asher who have been active in securing the orchards for the past 5 years.
